Pilgrims are extended an invitation of hope at the Shrine of Notre-Dame de Rocamadour. The ongoing tradition of pilgrimage is thousands of years old and rooted deep in Christianity, coming from France and carried over by Jacques Cartier. In the winter of 1536, while his men were threatened by disease and many perished, Cartier implored the assistance of Notre-Dame de Rocamadour. Fortuitously, a member of the First Nations showed him a salutary remedy. The memory of that first pilgrimage and of the first miracle to occur on Canadian soil lives on at the church of Saint-Fidèle. On site, prayer and meditation are guided by a circuit that offers both a journey of faith and historical information. The shrine’s patron, Notre-Dame de Rocamadour, reminds us that Mary was watching over the entrance of the Catholic faith and its outreach throughout North America, successfully completing the first evangelization.
